| Q: You weren’t looking to buy a business. How did you become the owner of Leelanau Gourmet? Lauren: I stumbled across Leelanau Gourmet’s signature roasted walnuts while frequenting the farmers’ market. I would chat with the original owner, hear how walnuts are the healthiest nut for you, and ultimately learn about his backstory and family. When he was looking to retire, he asked if I’d be interested in taking over. At first, I said, “No, there’s no way I can do that!” to which he said, “Oh, sorry, that’s the first time I said out loud that it might be time to pass it on.” It seemed like fate (or maybe I’m a little woo woo), and the thought didn’t go away, so I found a way to make it possible. There was no lapse in market presence during the handoff. The Sunday after his final market, we moved everything to my place, and that first week, I was trialing the recipes for the first time before and after my full-time job. The timing was unbelievable. Six months earlier, there was no way I would’ve considered the opportunity. I was just getting to know the entrepreneurship community in town at the time, and being surrounded by like-minded folks made it easier to imagine what is possible. People have asked why I chose walnuts, and it’s really not about the walnuts for me. I value eating locally, buying from the people you know, and getting involved in the community. My favorite part of the week is chatting with everyone who comes to the market—locals, tourists, and buying from other vendors! Q: What do you want the women of Northern Michigan to know? Lauren: Thank you for paving the way and bringing wholesome energy to Northern Michigan! You are more capable than you think you are, and we live in a region full of excitement and opportunity.
